A job cluster at the heart of Turku

Turku Science Park is one of the biggest and oldest science parks in Finland. Unlike most other science parks in the country, Turku Science Park is integrated into the urban structure and is located within a walking distance from the city-centre, in the immediate vicinity of the Kupittaa railway station and the Turku–Helsinki motorway.

Institutes based in the area include the University of Turku, Åbo Akademi University, Turku University of Applied Sciences, Diaconia University of Applied Sciences and over 400 other organisations and companies which employ a total of nearly 16,000 people. There are around 35,000 students and over 400 professors in the universities. Some 200 doctors graduate from the local universities annually. Turku University Hospital is also located in the Turku Science Park area.

Turku Science Park fosters active start-up culture which is promoted by the start-up community SparkUp based in ElectroCity. SparkUp arranges events and provides guidance to growth companies. The activities of SparkUp are run by Turku Science Park, the student organisation Boost Turku, and Creative Venture Creve.

Key fields: biotechnology and ICT

Turku Science Park’s leading edge fields are biotechnology and ICT. Turku is the leading centre of biotechnology in Finland and around half of the country’s pharmaceutical and diagnostics companies operate in Turku. Areas of application in ICT found in Turku Science Park include e.g. health and well-being technology, bioICT, DTV technology, and language and teaching technology.

On Tykistökatu street, BioCity serves as an umbrella for the bioscience education and research of the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University. Furthermore, the buildings house a number of companies that conduct research and development in biotechnology, as well as service companies.

The ICT-City building in the same block combines the ICT education and research of the University of Turku, Åbo Akademi University and Turku University of Applied Sciences, thus securing that professionals in the field will find their place in the Turku Science Park area already during their studies. The premises of ICT companies are located throughout the science park, mostly in ElectroCity and DataCity.
