You don’t have to do everything yourself, says Jan-Peter Hautaniemi, COO of Turun Teknologiakiinteistöt.
Finns are used to ironing their own shirts, changing their own car tires, and renovating their own homes. However, there is a change in the air, as more and more people today prefer to spend their time on something else: they get their cars washed, order home cleaning, and some even hire interior designers.
In workplaces, the DIY mentality ranges from coffee-making shifts to loading the dishwasher, and I have even heard of a CEO who voluntarily cleans their company's premises. They are likely an exception, however, as few people arriving at the office want to "just in passing" take out the trash and dust – and that’s a good thing.
From an Excel perspective, professionals' time in the workplace should not be spent on secondary tasks.
From an Excel perspective, professionals' time in the workplace should not be spent on secondary tasks. Cleaning, and even loading the dishwasher, comes with a much higher price tag if done by a high-level programmer instead of a cleaner – and the end result might even show who was at work.
At Turun Teknologiakiinteistöt, we have taken the idea of service culture a step further. As our customer, organizations don’t have to spend time even on arranging cleaning or picking up mail, because we handle everything – unless the client company happens to have that overly enthusiastic CEO who wants to start their morning by vacuuming. We can certainly accommodate that too, and we can even bring a vacuum cleaner on-site if needed.
